New Azure CosmosDB Data Explorer Features

Azure CosmosDB Team announced some useful new features for Azure CosmosDB Data Explorer at Build 2019 conference. I am excited about the Notebook support for all APIs. I am going to cover the data explorer features in this post so let's see what's new.

First one is, you can save your queries and retrieve them back later. Developers have been asking for this feature for some time and I am sure they are going to be happy have this feature. You can simply save your queries to your local drive from Azure portal or you can save your queries in CosmosDB database. To do that, CosmosDB will create a new container and keep your queries in that container. You can access your queries from SDK in this way. Unfortunately, this option is not free, and you will be charged.

As you can see in the following example, we have a new toolbar on the top and you have an icon for Save Query. When you try this first time, you will see the window in the right about the cost. When I wrote this post, saving queries were costing you 77 cents per day. I hope this feature will become free in future.

To be able to open your saved queries, you can click on Open icon. If you keep your queries in your local drive, you can load them by selecting Open Query From Disk.

Another new feature is the new Query Stats tab. Query Stats are not new, you could only see them from Azure CosmosDB SDK or REST API. Now, you can see the Query Stats under the Query Stats tab in the Data Explorer. To be able to see the Query Stats, you had to know some programming. This new tab is going to make Query Stats available to everybody. It is located right beside the Results tab and there are all kind of great information about your query. You have an option to download the stats in CSV format too.

Last feature I am going to cover here, is the full screen mode, Data Explorer will open in a new window in full screen mode. In this way, you won't see all other tab, buttons from Azure Portal. You can focus on your queries.
